About

A circular economy bolsters the resilience of an economy, not only through its environmental benefits but also through the economic contribution of new industries and industrial development. In the South African context, the Circular Economy is seen as a new source of growth and should be central to economic recovery.

The transition to a circular economy provides a means to implement a just transition for South Africa, unlock socio-economic opportunities, address the country’s international climate commitments and make significant progress towards achieving the SDGs.

The South African government recognises the circular economy as a driver of economic growth and modern re-industrialisation. Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) play a key role in enabling the country’s transition to a low-carbon, circular economy.
